Continuing Excellence in Orthopedics

Attendees of this year’s R. Kirklin Ashley Lectureship Series engage in hands-on workshops to learn the latest in pediatric spine deformity treatment.

The R. Kirklin Ashley Lectureship Series: Three decades of leading insights and
innovations in orthopedic practice

The orthopedics department at Shriners Children’s Northern California recently hosted the annual R. Kirklin Ashley Lectureship Series, reinforcing our commitment to clinical excellence and education. Over 30 medical professionals attended the event, which featured enriching lectures and presentations.

Since 1993, this series has welcomed a distinguished orthopedic leader each year to share insights, research and best practices. This year’s guest was Firoz Miyanji, M.D., FRCSC, clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Miyanji specializes in pediatric spinal deformity and has extensive training and experience, including spine surgery and orthopedics fellowships.

The lectureship honors Dr. R. Kirklin Ashley, a revered surgeon and educator known for his kindness, diagnostic expertise and surgical skill. Dr. Ashley had a long and impactful career at Shriners Children’s Northern California, serving as chief of staff and continuing to care for patients after retirement. His legacy is perpetuated through the R. Kirklin Ashley Spine Research Endowment, established by his wife, Elizabeth, to support ongoing research in pediatric spine deformities.

This series advances orthopedic care and embodies Dr. Ashley’s dedication to education and patient-centered care. It reflects our mission to improve children’s lives through innovation, education and compassionate treatment.
