When the temperature drops and the days get shorter, winter brings a whole new set of adventures — and risks — for kids and their families. Sledding, snowball fights and gathering around the fireplace can all be a blast, but staying safe takes a little extra planning. Before you bundle up and head outside, here’s what every family should know to keep winter fun and accident-free.
Layer Like a Champ
- Dress in loose, thin layers: thermal base, sweater/fleece and waterproof coat
- Wear a hat, scarf/neck warmer and water-resistant mittens or gloves
- Choose insulated, waterproof boots and thick socks
- Cover all skin to prevent frostbite
Bright Gear, Safer Play
- Dress kids in bright, reflective clothing for visibility
- Pick sledding hills far from roads, trees and fences
- Sled feet-first, with helmets on, and keep eyes on younger kids
- Skate only where local officials say it’s safe
Safe and Cozy Indoor
- Keep heaters and fireplaces clear of toys, blankets and decorations
- Use safety screens and never leave kids alone near flames
- Watch out for glass fireplace fronts — they can be dangerously hot even after the fire is out
- Check carbon monoxide and smoke detectors regularly and replace batteries
Holiday Cheer, Safe and Clear
- Toss frayed cords and unplug lights before bed or leaving home
- Give your tree a fresh cut and water daily so it doesn’t dry out
- Keep trees away from fireplaces, heaters and candles
- Switch to flameless candles for sparkle without the risk
