Shriners Children’s is taking a bold step forward with plans to establish a research institute in Science Square Labs in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Shriners Children’s Research Institute will be focused exclusively on advancing scientific discovery, unlike our medical facilities that are devoted to patient care. This dedicated engine for research and innovation will attract top physician-scientists, draw support from mission-driven philanthropists and forge high-impact collaborations with leading researchers.
This milestone is the culmination of a successful research partnership launched in 2019 between the Georgia Institute of Technology and Shriners Children’s. More than 25 joint projects have made an impact, including those focused on robotic exoskeletons, wearable sleep monitors and AI-driven insights into complex conditions like scoliosis.
“The Shriners Children’s Research Institute will serve as a multidisciplinary innovation hub to advance the healthcare of children,” said Marc Lalande, Ph.D., vice president of research programs. “The close partnership with the outstanding biomedical engineers and scientists from Georgia Tech and Emory University will accelerate discovery and spearhead new treatments and therapies.”
This marks a remarkable new chapter in the story of Shriners Children’s. Research efforts that began decades ago are delivering real benefits to patients today, and the work underway now — from genomics and motion analysis to artificial intelligence and beyond — is poised to drive meaningful advances in pediatric care for years to come.
