Philadelphia Achieves Level I Specialty Status

In November, Shriners Children’s Philadelphia became only the third children’s hospital in the country to earn the prestigious Level I Specialty Musculoskeletal Center designation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). This verification is the highest designation that can be awarded. Philadelphia’s recognition follows Shriners Children’s Northern California, awarded verification in 2022. This makes two of the three hospitals with this credential Shriners Children’s facilities.

Verification relies on an extremely rigorous process. Applicant hospitals are evaluated by representative surgeons from the ACS, nursing leaders, performance improvement teams and others to show that they meet nationally recognized benchmarks.

“This prominent verification informs our patients, the community and team members that Shriners Children’s is committed to delivering the safest and highest standards to ensure children receive exceptional surgical care,” said Maureen Cottom, director, physician quality and outcomes.

The verification process at Shriners Children’s Philadelphia took four years of work, said the hospital’s director of performance improvement and risk management, Leslie Usher. “Our surgeons are world-renowned, and the outcomes of their operations are so positive and groundbreaking,” she added.
